Feb 04, 2017 Geared engines are made with small cylinders, and the engine proper runs at a speed of 100 to 200 r. p. m. The gearing usually gives a reduction of 1/3 to 1/5 so that the drum revolves at a moderate speed. The small cylinders make the first cost lower than that of a direct-acting engine; but the gearing for large hoists is a serious objection.
